The Iraq War drama "The Hurt Locker" won best picture and five other prizes Sunday at the Academy Awards, its haul including best director for Kathryn Bigelow. She is the first woman in the 82-year history of the Oscars to earn Hollywood's top prize for filmmakers.

A baby elephant presumed stillborn is now up and walking in an Australian zoo. The male calf, born Wednesday, was declared dead in the womb but apparently survived in a coma in what was the longest labor ever recorded for a land animal.

The number of multigenerational households in the United States has increased 30 percent since 2000, meaning now one in six people live in such homes. Some of the rise is due to tougher economic times, but extended life spans and increased options in home health care have also contributed.

Female Pilots Receive Gold Medal
